Kumble: Team effort won it for us

Indian captain Anil Kumble said his team's crushing win in the second Test in Galle was a result of great team work and quality.

Speaking at the most match presentaion ceremony, Kumble said: "It was a great team effort. Everybody contributed. I had faith in the boys to bounce back."

Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh were exceptional with the bat and ball respectively. While Sehwag scored a rapid fire double century and a quick fire fifty in the match, Harbhajan demolished the Sri Lankan attack with 10 wickets in the match. Kumble, who has had a trying series also chipped in with five wickets in the match.

Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan bowled beautifully with the new ball in the Sri Lankan second innings to deny them any chance of a fightback.

The Indian skipper said he always knew there was quality in the side: "There is a lot of quality in the side. The way our openers got us off to brilliant starts helped us control the match."

"Harbhajan, Ishant and Zak bowled brilliantly and that sealed the match for us."

However, Kumble did admit that there were still a few chinks in the armour, most significant being, perhaps, the failure of the famed middle order.

"Yes, there are a few areas we need to work out and hopefully the boys would have sorted them out by the time we start off for the last Test."

"Overall, I am very satisfied with the victory."

Kumble, who has been reported to have met match officials to express his displeasure with the umpire review system said the system was good for the game but there are some areas that still need to be brushed.

"It is a good system. But there are some areas that have to be looked into. Hopefully, after the series, we will sit with the officials and sort out the areas that need to be brushed up."

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan captain, Mahela Jayawardene paid credit to the Indian team for the way the visitors after the mauling in Colombo.

"India played really good cricket. Their bowlers constantly kept the pressure on us and their openers were brilliant."

"India's new ball bowlers got them wickets, which is extermely crucial in any form of the game."

The stylish middle order batsman said his team would brush up their weak areas and come back strongly in the third and last Test in Colombo at the PSC.

"We need to figure out a few things and come back strongly. 307, for instance was a good score for us to get on this wicket and we should have got them."

Jayawardene said it was a very close game, nevertheless.

He was also excited to see the rapid growth and maturity of Ajanth Mendis, who bagged his first 10 wicket haul in only his second Test.

"It is brilliant to see Mendis progress this way."

The Lankan captain conceded it was the batting which let his team down.

"Our bowlers constantly kept us in the hunt but it was the batting that did us in."

India and Sri Lanka clash for the series deciding Test from Friday at the PSC in Colombo.
