Spurs Rant 003: Let's get real
Kelvin Leong wants to focus on the players Tottenham Hotspur have and not ‘the one’ the London club lost.
Finally! Our cult hero, Dimitar Berbatov has made his ‘dream move’ to the Red Devils.
A collective sigh of relief can be heard amongst Spurs fans I am sure, because we all knew, Berba’s heart was no longer with us.
The way he departed might not have befitted his contributions to our cause the past two seasons, but then again, since Daniel Levy took charge, when has any outgoing Spurs player left without a big hulabaloo! – Keane’s departure to Liverpool was a classic example.
So now that we’ve sold our number one strike force, it is time to focus on what we have than what could have been.
Anyone who watched Russian giant, Roman Pavlyuchenko in action at Euro2008 will tell you, the guy is an old-fashioned classic English center-forward in the mould of Gary Lineker.
Alright. Maybe I’m exaggerating too much, but how often do you find a targetman who is as good with his feet as he does with his head?
Roman has the two needed attributes to be a top striker in this league. Quick thinking and quick feet.
A man his size can sometimes be awkwardly clumsy on the dribble, but in Roman, we’ve got the exact opposite.
A big and small combination upfront will be Juande Ramos’ chosen tactic just as he did with Freddie Kanoute and Fabiano at Sevilla.
Roman’s game will compliment the lightning quick Darren Bent, who can finally focus on his game without worrying about being dropped again.
Giovanni can now be deployed down the left, David Bentley down the right, Luka Modric and Tom Huddlestone in the middle.
If this midfield quartet looked suspect in our opening two games, that is because they had no striker to feed the ball to.
With Roman down at the Lane, Modric, Bentley and Giovanni’s crosses will finally have an end product.
But what excites me even more is that in Vedran Corluka, we have signed one of the best young defenders in the English game at the moment.
I reckon Ramos bought the Croat because he can act as a backup stopper when Ledley ‘I am the new sicknote’ King’s injuries act up again and also to challenge Alan Hutton on the right.
Just like Darren Anderton was, King is one of our best player when he is on the field, but his injuries cause instability within our defensive rank. Imagine having a game plan all week, and then your key player is ruled out by an injury come game time.
So yes, it has been a highly satisfying final day at the market. A ridiculously overpriced one if I might add.
We cashed in on ‘Berbasulk’ and brought in three excellent signings that could shape our season.
Oh, did I not mention Frazier ‘Speedy Gonzalez’ Campbell? This boy might have put up a better challenge to Usain Bolt than Tyson Gay did at the Olympics.
Our club motto is Audere est Facere, ‘To dare is to do’.
Well , with arguably our strongest squad for seasons, it is time the players get real and do it!
Come on you Spurs!
