Brett Favre

Favre voted offensive captain

Brett Favre was voted one of the New York Jets' offensive captains after being acquired from the Green Bay Packers.

"I'm honoured," Favre said. "I felt a little uncomfortable to be voted. I feel like I need to earn it."

Always recognised as one of the game's best leaders, Favre came out of retirement during the off-season and was acquired by the Jets on August 6.

The 38-year-old quarterback has started an NFL-record 253 consecutive games heading into Sunday's season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

"I don't want it to be based on past performances or longevity," Favre said. "All those things are important, but what's important is what I do here and how I carry myself as a team-mate, what type of leader I am.

"But you have to vote a captain, as every team does, early in the year and I'm honoured to represent this team."

Favre joined guard Alan Faneca as offensive captains. Defensive end Shaun Ellis and safety Kerry Rhodes were named defensive captains, while David Bowens and Leon Washington will represent special teams.
