White Sox OF Quentin to undergo wrist surgery

Chicago White Sox left fielder Carlos Quentin has been hit by an American League-high 20 pitches, but it was the blow he levied on his bat that may have prematurely ended the MVP candidate's season.

The White Sox announced Friday that Quentin will undergo surgery for a fractured right wrist, putting his availability for the remainder of the season in doubt.

Quentin will have a screw inserted in the wrist when he undergoes the procedure Monday at Rush University Medical Center. He will then be re-evaluated in two to three weeks. The regular season ends three weeks from this Sunday.

"I'm just going to stay positive and hold on to every hope that it can get better as fast as possible," Quentin said.

The team said Quentin suffered the injury during Monday's game at Cleveland. Quentin fouled off a pitch from the Indians' Cliff Lee, then repeated a habit he said he's always had of holding the bat in his left hand and rapping the barrel with his closed right fist in disgust.

"I came down on the bat head with my right hand with a closed fist I kind of hit it a little bit low and nicked my wrist," Quentin said. "I finished the at-bat. Forty minutes later, I started feeling something in my wrist. It's something I've done a lot, but unfortunately I hit the bone perfectly -- not in a good spot.

"It's something that I'm still having trouble believing that it happened that way."

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen called it a tough lesson learned for Quentin about displays of anger - no matter how small.

"You're not going to win that one - you're always going to get hurt," Guillen said. "And you're not just hurting yourself, you're hurting the ballclub. Every time he misses a ball he does the same stuff. I guess he's got to learn from that now."
