Brett Favre with his new team.

Favre practices with Jets for first time

After a whirlwind tour for the past two days, Brett Favre finally got down to business with his new team on Saturday.

Favre passed a physical Saturday morning, then took the field to practice with the New York Jets for the first time since they acquired the superstar quarterback from the Green Bay Packers late Wednesday night.

Earlier Saturday, New York coach Eric Mangini announced that Favre will start the Jets' second preseason game against the Washington Redskins on August 16.

"There's nothing more to be done but get this offense down, get acclimated to the guys and the system," Favre said following his first Jets' practice. "That will take time and it's tough, but so far, it's been great."

Favre was traded for a conditional draft pick and was introduced by the Jets at a conference held prior to the team's preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night.

Favre was on the sidelines, watching the Jets defeat the Browns, 24-20.

Less than 24 hours later, he met New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who introduced him during a news conference at City Hall.

Bloomberg presented Favre with a number of gifts, including a "Broadway" street sign, a stack of cheesecakes and an empty key ring - where he can eventually hang a key to the city if he leads the Jets to a Super Bowl championship.

Favre, who displayed his brand new No. 4 Jets jersey, also received a $4 Metrocard, which is worth two rides on the New York Subway system. However, the fun and games ended Saturday.

"It's the first time I've put on the pads since the Giants game," said the 38-year-old Favre, referring to Green Bay's 23-20 overtime defeat to the New York Giants in last season's NFC championship game. "I'll pay for it on Sunday, but I'll be OK."
